The World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks (February 17th – March 31st) showcase stunning, enormous ice sculptures illuminated in a rainbow of colors. Wander through the ice park after dark when the magic truly comes alive. See artists from around the globe compete to create elaborate frozen masterpieces using nothing but imagination, talent, and chainsaws.

Fur Rendezvous
The Fur Rondy festival in Anchorage (February 22nd - March 3rd) offers wacky fun for all ages with events like the Running of the Reindeer and the outhouse race. Sample local cuisine at the food fair or catch high-flying stunts at the Snow Shovel Toss competition. Soak in the festive atmosphere highlighted by fireworks and a carnival. This event celebrates the Alaskan pioneering spirit and has been running since 1935. This event goes right into the Iditarod.

Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race
No winter in Alaska would be complete without witnessing the start of the iconic Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. On March 2nd, mushers and teams do a ceremonial start in Anchorage and then head out to Willow for the official start the next day. They race to Nome, traveling 1,000 miles through remote wilderness, with the leaders crossing the finish line in Nome in about a week. Visitors can meet the dogs, peruse race memorabilia, or even fly out to checkpoints along the trail.

2024 Arctic Winter Games
Finally, the 2024 Arctic Winter Games (March 10th-16th) will be held in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. This is the first time they will be held in the Mat-Su Valley. 2000 athletes from Arctic nations gather to compete in 21 events ranging from hockey to reindeer racing. Events will also include traditional arctic games. Share the Olympic-style excitement while gaining cultural appreciation.
